We Did This

I'm a knob. Yup. But instead of going to yesterday's post about Nicole Arbour and editing it so I don't look like a knob, I decided to write about it here. I thought I did all the research I needed to do on Arbour before I formed an opinion of her. I empathized with her because she got in a car accident years ago , suffered poor health and fought her way back. I empathized because she was gorgeous and hot female comedians have a tough time because people would rather laugh at an obese female comedian, or one with funny facial features or whatever. Arbour was quoted as saying in the past couple of days, that she's getting backlash because she doesn't look like a typical comedian. Ouch. She definitely worded that wrong. That's saying that typical female comedians are dogs. Um noooo Nicole. You are very attractive and yes its difficult for attractive comediennes because audiences are finicky about those things. But what do you mean a 'typical comedian'? Tina Fey is hot. Natasha Leggero is uber hot. Locally in the GTA many many of the female comedians are hot. So what's up yo? In a strange foreshadowing , I spoke of this issue in an article I was interviewed for in 2013. Go to my Media page to read it on the subject.
I'm slowly stepping back and forming a new opinion based on what I've learned. She's not necessarily the person I thought she was. What she stated in her fat shaming video was more of a reflection of her real values, rather than someone who was mistakenly judged. I thought she was hard on people who are overweight because she worked hard at restoring her health after her accident and expects others to do the same. But instead, based on those that know her , that's her value system. She's also known as a 'user'. She has no problem sleeping her way around town with single, or married men . She's actually been a pitch person for many brands and maybe Ashley Madison should call on her for their new ad campaign!Nicole grew up as a little Honey BooBoo toddler in tiara and her mom was a typical stage mom. That taught Nicole from a young age its all about her looks. She burned bridges at Much Music and other places she's worked at. And that's why she went on to create her own content. After her car accident, she went out of the scene and came back with her postive movement #goteam. And produced very positive content. But some say because it didn't gain traction, she went back to her old ways. Again, this is what is being said by those that knew her over the years. Now that I know all this, her fat shaming video has taken a whole new spin. She actually does look down on overweight people. Wow. And she walks the earth with us too.
But here's the thing. This whole issue about Arbour isn't about her as much as it is about us. We created her as a society. Its our social order. We raised her and now there she is, with a pretty shell and loud social media following to share OUR value system as a society. We value the attractive and devalue the people that don't look like what we think they should. This isn't new , but it does remind us that we are douchebags too.
And once again, lets not forget , what she said in her fat shaming video is not new. That MALE comedians like George Carlin CLICK HERE and Ricky Gervais CLICK HERE went off on this subject long before her. But once again, in our social order, we revere these guys and its ok for them to say it. We laugh and on we go. We say things like 'its true' and that's why we laugh. And no matter how much people are villainizing Arbour, many agree with her but just won't say so.
The issue with Arbour is that teenaged kids look at this and it fuels them. Either it supports their bullying or those that are being bullied feel worse. Or maybe its just an average sized child who has the normal self image problems that teenagers have. , and this video makes them more self conscious.
I'm not sure Arbour cares much though , because apparently she' s up 10,000 followers on twitter! And that too folks, is also part of our social order. That now, our society values those with large social media followings. The Kardashian culture that we all subscribe too. That WE created.
