#jfl42 was a wonderful 10days of Comedy bliss! I had the joy of watching Iliza Shlesinger and one of my favourites TJ Miller. Firstly I must say Iliza was an incredible treat. She's young, but all pro. Its evident she works diligently at the craft and didn't skip a beat! She's highly intelligent and very very quick. She visits topics from a completely different approach. She just doesn't talk about dating , she pokes fun of women's role in dating but as a quirky character. I loved it . Just brilliant. One of the indicators that she will have a long career in Comedy. Although Shlesinger is a Jewish private school girl, you would never think 'princess' . She doesn't take herself seriously , but takes her job seriously. She was the winner of Last Comic Standing in the sixth season and was twice selected by other comics to compete in head to head eliminations. Her latest stand-up special entitled Freezing Hot can be seen on Netflix.
TJ Miller. What can I say. Eccentric and most definitely one of the most talented improvisational actors out there today. I think his entire act at JFL42 was improv! The crowd loved him and he loved them back. And what makes TJ Miller so truly delectable? He gets that this is Show BUSINESS! He spent the first two minutes of his set, highlighting the sponsors of jfl42. He did it in a fun way but ensured that everyone in the room knew who was paying the bills. Dana Gould talked about this at JFL Montreal 2015. TJ's even did a wonderful product placement for Evian Facial Spray. He repeated sprayed himself with something that the audience knew nothing about. Then after raising tremondous awareness, he explains the product to us. Is he actually getting paid by them to endorse the product? We don't know . But its brilliant comedy and marketing..my favourite combo! I had the pleasure of interviewing TJ Miller at JFL Montreal, for more listen here.
The JFL42 performances were packed which is great news for live comedy. Actually comedy as a genre is not only reigning in the world of live entertainment , but also on television. This article in Bloomberg Business indicates that stand-up comedy is bankrolling tv drama! That in fact, Stand-Up Specials are the big moneymakers for networks these days. Audiences can't get enough! I'm proud of the advances the craft has made in the world of entertainment and the overdue acknowledgement of Comedians. Stand-Up Comedy is undoubetedly one of the most difficult forms of entertainment, and finally it gets its day.
